CAS - Creativity, activity, service:
For CAS, a DP student completes activities that allow their learning to extend beyond the classroom. Many students choose to fulfill CAS requirements through community service or athletics, but additional possibilities exist so long as the project includes one of the three categories: creativity, activity or service. Throughout CAS, students reflect on their experiences and explain how their activities help them achieve specific learning outcomes.
SL – Service Learning:
For SL, a CP student completes approximately 50 documented hours of student interaction within community. Service learning is the practical application of knowledge and skills toward meeting an identified community need. Through service, students develop and apply personal and social skills in real-life situations involving decision-making, problem-solving, initiative, responsibility and accountability for their actions.
EE - Extended essay:
A DP student written research project of no more than 4000 words. Students choose their own topics and the completed essay provides a practical preparation for undergraduate research.
RP - Reflective Project:
A CP student written research paper of no more than 3000 words based on an “ethical dilemma” within the student's career pathway. This work encourages students to engage in personal inquiry, intellectual discovery, creativity, action and reflection, and to develop strong thinking, research and communication skills.
TOK - Theory of knowledge:
A course in which DP students discuss and examine the concept of knowledge– its worth, veracity, and forms. TOK requires DP students to submit an essay for external assessment.
PPS - Personal & Professional Skills:
A CP course in which students participate in a discussion oriented class on soft skills business world wants; discusses ethics, leadership, teamwork and more.
IA - Internal assessment:
An individual assessment evaluated by the subject teacher with a list of criteria and is usually focused on some subject-related work. Alongside the criteria, samples of the student’s work (oral performances, portfolios, lab reports, and essays) are also submitted to the IB.
LD - Language Development:
Language development ensures that all CP students have access and exposure to a second language. The opportunity to learn a second language is a central tenet of an IB education and increases students' understanding of the wider world. It develops students' oral, visual and written linguistic and communicative abilities.
